.env Example Generator
Create a shareable .env template by retaining variable names and removing every value and source comment.
Developers documenting required environment names without sharing configuration secrets.
Free to use. Your inputs are processed in this browser and are not included in usage analytics.
How to use .env example generator
- Paste the environment assignments you want to document.
- Generate a template with every assigned value blank.
- Review the variable names and share the resulting .env.example file.
What to know about the result
- Uses a Node-compatible literal .env subset: comments, export prefixes, quoted multiline strings, and double-quoted \n line breaks. Variables are strings; $ references remain literal.
- No shell evaluation or variable interpolation occurs. Duplicate assignments use the last value. Escaped quotes and ambiguous encodings are rejected.
- All values are blanked, including ports, feature flags, quoted multiline text, and credentials. Original comments are omitted because they may contain secrets.
- Variable names remain visible; review them if your configuration naming itself contains sensitive information.
